WI BATON RELAY, JUNE 2014
The WI will be celebrating its centenary In 2015. The start of its celebrations is the passing of the WI Centenary Baton.
The baton began its journey on 1st January 2014 in Anglesey and will finish in June 2015 having been to every WI Federation in England, Wales and the Islands. The Baton was handed over from Lincolnshire South Federation to Nottinghamshire on June 11th and it began its Nottinghamshire journey with a Robin Hood and Maid Marian themed send off from Newark Castle on that day, attended by the Mayor. During the following week it commenced its travel to every one of the 114 WIs who are part of the Nottinghamshire Federation, in varying modes of transport from Boat, Bicycle, Bus to tractors and a horse and cart before finally the baton is handed over to Derbyshire Federation on June 18 at Creswell Crags with an Arrow being sent into Derbyshire by Robin Hood We at Gedling WI received the Baton from Burton Joyce WI on Saturday 14th June 2014. Burton Joyce's handover to us was by motorcycle rider and pillion.
We choose a wedding theme for receiving the Baton and handing it over to Netherfield. Scrumptious of Carlton loaned us one of their beautiful wedding cars and they chauffeured us in style to Netherfield for the handover. Thanks to their generosity and the support of members we had a most enjoyable time
